NUS – ACM China Affair Lecture Series: Fetching incense, tea and water: An observation of religious rites performed by “Teochew shantang”

Using the rite of “fetching incense, tea and water” as a case study, the speaker attempts to explore how religious rites in the Teochew “shantang” (Hall of Charity) with the worship of the patron saint Song Dafeng as the center of influence, create a business network, form multiple layers of interaction with other communities, and establish a gigantic, cross-boundary network of faith.

本文以潮人善堂独特的“取香茶水”的宗教仪式为例,试图考察和诠释新加坡潮人善堂如何在运作中通过以崇奉大峰祖师的善堂信仰为核心,形成一种隐性的商业行为;这种隐性的商业行为又如何与其他社群产生多层面的互动,同时还建构了一个跨区域的善堂信仰网络。
