NUS – ACM China Affair Lecture Series: Fetching incense, tea and water: An observation of religious rites performed by “Teochew shantang”
27 Nov 2010
Saturday | 2pm to 4pm | @ Ngee Ann Auditorium, ACM Empress Place (Basement)
Associate Professor Lee Chee Hiang, NUS Department of Chinese Studies
Using the rite of “fetching incense, tea and water” as a case study, the speaker attempts to explore how religious rites in the Teochew “shantang” (Hall of Charity) with the worship of the patron saint Song Dafeng as the center of influence, create a business network, form multiple layers of interaction with other communities, and establish a gigantic, cross-boundary network of faith.
